Championing Women Entrepreneurs: Lessons from Jessica Lewis

As the global landscape evolves, women are breaking through glass ceilings and achieving the extraordinary in entrepreneurship. We are excited to present an exclusive interview with Jessica Lewis, CEO of LáLew PR, where she shares her journey as a trailblazing entrepreneur in the world of PR.

LáLew: When did you decide to be an entrepreneur?

Jessica: My journey to entrepreneurship is a unique one. I used to work for the Urban-Suburban Transfer Program as their communications specialist. It is the nation's first desegregation program and I am an alumni. I managed the website, social media channels, and quarterly newsletters.

I also organized youth summits and facilitated group sessions with participants. Through my employment there I was afforded the opportunity, via a tuition reimbursement program, to enroll in classes at MCC in Communication and Media Studies. Although I already obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree years before, this opportunity allowed me to get my feet wet in the world of communications.

I registered for a PR 101 course with Professor Dresden Engle. Her class was very lively and interactive. It piqued my interest, and I realized that I had a natural knack for PR. That was the gateway into my career in public relations and entrepreneurial journey.

LáLew: Have you ever felt like quitting when you’ve hit roadblocks in your industry?

Jessica: Being a business owner is hard. It’s probably the hardest job I’ve ever had. There’s been many times I wanted to throw in the towel but I know that my purpose is greater than any hardships that I face.

LáLew: What keeps you going as an entrepreneur?

Jessica: I am internally driven and have a team that I support. I take caring for my team seriously. That’s why we’ve prioritized wellness at our agency and self-care.

LáLew: Do you think you are disadvantaged being a woman in the PR industry?

Jessica: No, if anything, it has added to my experience.

LáLew: What do you have to say to women considering entrepreneurship in PR?

Jessica: Never be afraid to take risks. I’m a firm believer of “no risk, no reward.

LáLew: What would you say has been your best advantage being a woman entrepreneur?

Jessica: Supporting other women in their career journeys in PR and preparing the next generation of professional communicators through our internship program.
