PR TIP: CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY 365
As communicators, it’s important to celebrate the contributions of Black people throughout the year, and lifting black voices should be a priority. Cultural competency has become more of a priority as organizations strive toward meeting diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
It is very important to remember two things: diversity, equity and inclusion is not a trend and should spread beyond Black History Month. The most important way to engage with Black History Month is to support and uplift Black voices year-round. In order to be true champions of change, it is necessary that the celebration of Black contributions does not stop at the end of the month.
While avoiding the month entirely is a mistake, even messages with good intentions can undermine the goals of Black History Month. There are many ways to start authentically engaging in the goals of Black History Month. For starters, it is important to always have Black voices involved in the crafting of Black History Month strategy and messaging. It is also best to tell the truth about your organization's current status in completing its goals for diversity, equity and inclusion. It is important to recognize the most impactful actions that your organization can take to support the Black community.
