Duchess of Sussex: An Example of the Value of Perseverance

Megan, Duchess of Sussex has launched a new show on Netflix, With Love, Meghan. It’s been met with mixed reviews. The show features friends and celebrity guests invited to a California estate, where she shares her love of cooking, gardening and hosting.

I watched the show and was inspired by her recipes, outdoor parties and DIY decor. The show brings a fun and easy-going vibe to a landscape of reality TV riddled with catfighting, backbiting, profanity and physical altercations. Meghan and her husband Prince Harry are no strangers to the public eye. They have faced their share of scrutiny. From the moment she stepped foot into the royal palace until now, she has been subject to the court of public opinion.

When I read comments online, many criticize that she wanted privacy and left the establishment to flee from the spotlight. They use her Netflix deal to round up the firing squad and proclaim that she desperately wants attention from which she once sought refuge. I would argue that she wanted privacy for her personal life. This is a professional endeavor and there is a difference.

What most don't realize is that Meghan had a lifestyle bog called The Tig. She talked about food, travel, living, fashion and beauty. The Tig was established in 2014, and Meghan closed the site in 2017 shortly after her engagement to Prince Harry. Her love of lifestyle trends was never lost. It’s been re-imagined to the form we see today.

Despite criticism, Meghan continues to forge ahead. On March 13, she announced a new podcast called, Confessions of a Female Founder on Leomonada Media which dropped on April 8. She invites listeners to be a fly on the wall as she has candid conversations with female founders and friends about the success, the struggles and never-before-told-stories of building a business.

As a female founder, I can attest to the difficulties and triumphs of entrepreneurship. I’ve been in business for nine years as the owner of LáLew Public Relations, a public relations agency serving clients in the Finger Lakes Region and beyond. I have learned many lessons along the way. A podcast focused on this topic should be an amazing resource to learn how others have navigated the world of business.

What I’ve observed and what Meghan has demonstrated is perseverance needed to be successful in this world. And if the podcast wasn't enough, she launched a line of products through her brand, As Ever.

If you need inspiration to continue your journey and turn your passion into purpose, glean from these three takeaways from Meghan:

  • Rise above the noise

  • Face challenges head on

  • Find your niche and work it

You may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you’re someone's perfect blend.
