Mindful Meetings: The Power of a Centering Moment
Mindful Meetings: The Power of a Centering Moment
Before all of our team meetings, we take a few minutes to center ourselves. As we make a conscious effort to promote mental wellness at work, a centering moment allows our team members the chance to take a few deep breaths, release tension and prepare to be present in the meeting. Below, we share LáLew’s steps for our weekly centering moment and how it is easily incorporated into our team meetings.
Each week, after all team members have joined the meeting, our President and CEO, Jessica Lewis, invites us to turn off our cameras for a centering moment. This allows everyone to focus on their breathing in their own space and at their own pace. The centering moment then proceeds as follows:
Plant both feet firmly on the ground and sit up straight. Stretch your body as needed, doing what feels good for you.
Close your eyes and focus on your breathing, shutting out external distractions.
Take a deep breath in for three seconds, hold the breath for four seconds, then release it for five seconds.
Repeat that breathing pattern two more times, doing the last set on your own for a total of three times.
Open your eyes, turn your camera on, and be present at the meeting.
Practicing a centering moment before our team meetings helps us to foster an environment where team members feel encouraged to take care of and connect with themselves, leading to productivity and positivity. With just a few minutes of breathwork and grounding, the LáLew team is able to bring our best to our time together. We encourage other teams to try incorporating a centering moment into their routines and experience the benefits of a grounded, centered team firsthand!
